Here’s something you don’t see every day. American made socks made by the same family for 110 years and counting at Wigwam Mills.
While being knitted in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA, might impress you, Wigwam goes a bit further.
In reality, 85% of their materials are sourced in America. The wool used is almost all sourced from American yarn spinners who in turn, purchase from American wool growers.
Sure, they could have easily gone overseas like the majority of brands out there in search of less-expensive labor and materials, but the fact remains that they have continued to refuse to do so. Interestingly enough, their loyalty to these principals seems to have extended to their employees who on average, have 17 years spent at the company.
Of course, they do other things that I find rather neat, like using solar heated water in their dye house.
Beyond the company story itself, let’s talk socks. I tried on my first pair not too long ago and I like them very much. The pair I put on came with a lifetime guarantee which was nice but the Ultimax technology was what interested me the most. It’s said to be their patented moisture control technology and it works by using both transport and repelling fibers.
After a long hike, my feet remained dry making me believe that Ultimax technology works. There was no odor, and while I generally never get blisters, my feet where indeed blister free. In terms of comfort, fit and feel these felt like premium socks. Upon closer inspection, the construction seems top notch. I really can’t find anything to complain about, as I genuinely enjoy wearing them.
While socks are socks, Wigwam offers some unique features, a really attractive guarantee, and the fact that they are American made, well, makes them a winner in my book. My sock drawer is going to be filled with them in the future.
