At first glance one may associate the tomahawk with Native Americans and historical combat, with little use in the modern world.
These small, single-handed axes originated in North America and are quite similar to the hatchet. The name itself is derived from the Powhatan and Proto-Algonquian words loosely interpreted as “to cut off by tool.”
For much of its history the tomahawk was primarily applied in battle and everyday labor. By the time early Europeans introduced metal blades in place of stone the tomahawk was an indispensable tool for both native and settler.
While the blade end of a tomahawk is traditionally used for chopping and slicing, the blunt end could consist of a hammer or spike. The tomahawk could also be thrown for lethal aim, leading to still-existent throwing competitions in North America and Canada.
Like hatchets, tomahawks are extremely useful to the modern man. Hikers, campers, hunters, and those who wish to take on earthly tasks with their bare hands can all benefit from the updated tomahawk. Modern varieties vary, with the blunt end consisting of a prybar or pipe, and weighted heads that vary according to necessary force.
The tomahawk is indeed a throwback to our forefathers, and the painstakingly crafted tools that accompanied them into unknown territory. Judging by its many uses and nearly unaltered design, the tomahawk is proof that the old ways can still be the finest.
