While the LGBTQ community has gained a louder voice in Hollywood, they still face opposition. Hollywood is attempting to be more inclusive and include voices of different backgrounds and genders, but there are still many obstacles in the way. Several celebs have found themselves under an intense spotlight after making homophobic comments or slurs. This has led to a push from the public to get these homophobic celebrities canceled. In some cases, these comments have already impacted their careers, with some actors losing a significant role or a major opportunity.
Strangely some celebrities’ careers have flourished despite their horrid views. But for the most part, these stars that have made homophobic comments deeply regret what they have said and apologize countless times on social media and in interviews. With that in mind, let’s take a look at stars that made homophobic comments and deserve to be canceled.

1. Kirk Cameron

In the 80s and 90s, Growing Pains actor Kirk Cameron was the ultimate teen star. Initially an atheist, he became a born-again Christian at the height of the series’ popularity. In 2012, he made a controversial appearance on Piers Morgan Tonight.
When discussing gay marriage, he claimed it was “unnatural, it’s detrimental and ultimately destructive to so many of the foundations of civilization.” Cameron’s comment received backlash from Gay rights activists and GLAAD.
2. Kid Rock

Singer Kid Rock is known for his controversial and outspoken persona. He rose to fame in the 90s and early 2000s as an outlaw and rebel.
At a 2021 concert, Rock used a homophobic slur toward people recording his performance in the front row. After realizing his comments were upsetting, Rock apologized and reaffirmed his relationship with the LGBTQ community. However, in June 2022, he mocked Pride month when discussing guns in America.
3. DaBaby

Rapper DaBaby has released chart-topping singles and performed all over the globe. However, his homophobic comments have overshadowed his career in some ways.
In 2021, he faced a significant backlash when he made several homophobic remarks and spread misinformation about HIV/AIDS during a concert. Initially, he refused to apologize, but as the controversy grew, he had no choice.
After posting an apology on Instagram, he deleted it one week later, adding fuel to the fire. Several stars spoke out against DaBaby’s comments, including Little Nas X, Demi Lovato, and Elton John. While still liked by some rap fans, DaBaby’s popularity has taken a huge hit.
4. Mel Gibson

Actor Mel Gibson has a reputation for creating controversy through his comments and films. In 1991, GLAAD demanded that Gibson apologize for homophobic comments he made in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais.
At first, Gibson refused to apologize for his offensive remarks but later worked with GLAAD to understand how his comments impacted the LGBTQ community. Later in his career, Gibson blamed drinking vodka for his homophobic statements. Rumors also suggest Gibson tried to talk Heath Ledger out of starring in Brokeback Mountain.
5. Isaiah Washington

Actor Isaiah Washington was on his way to becoming a household name with his role in Grey’s Anatomy. At one point, Washington got into a heated argument with co-star Patrick Dempsey and used a homophobic slur to describe another cast member.
The issue appeared resolved until Washington addressed the topic at the Golden Globe Awards in 2007, using the slur publicly. This caused outrage and the series chose not to renew Washington’s contract. His carer has struggled since.
6. Phil Robertson

Phil Robertson became world famous for starring in the reality series Duck Dynasty. In 2013, Robertson made several homophobic remarks during an interview with GQ Magazine.
Based on his faith, Robertson claimed gay marriage is a sin. The interview and his comments led to anger from critics. It resulted in A&E suspending Duck Dynasty until fan outrage brought the series back nine days later.
7. Tracy Morgan

Tracy Morgan is best known for portraying a fictional version of himself in the critically acclaimed series 30 Rock. Morgan is famous for his outspoken and sometimes controversial live stand-up comedy shows.
During a performance in 2011, Morgan made several violent and homophobic remarks. Morgan even claimed he’d stab his son when discussing his son possibly being gay. Morgan immediately apologized to the LGBTQ community and his fans. He admitted he was wrong and deeply regretted those comments.

8. Paris Hilton

Socialite and reality star Paris Hilton is no stranger to controversy. In 2012, a gay friend showed Hilton the Grindr dating app during a taxi ride in New York. Unbeknownst to Hilton, the cab driver secretly recorded her comments. She called gay men “disgusting” and added, “Dude, most of them probably have AIDS… I would be so scared if I were a gay guy. You’ll like, die of AIDS.”
Hilton denied being homophobic and noted she was having a private conversation with a friend. Hilton later apologized to her friends, family, and fans.
9. Jack Maynard

Youtube star Jack Maynard is proof that offensive tweets from years ago can come back to haunt you. Maynard gained a loyal following and fanbase through his popular YouTube page. His popularity led him to appear on the reality series I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here.
In 2017, past tweets, which included homophobic remarks, came back to haunt the rising star. The tweets were so damaging that he left the series after giving a lengthy apology.
10. Kevin Hart

Comedian and actor Kevin Hart was all set to host the Academy Awards in 2019. Hart climbed to the top of the industry, becoming one of its funniest and most prominent stars. He was one step away from achieving his dream of hosting the Oscars when it all went wrong.
Homophobic tweets he sent between 2010 and 2011 surfaced. Initially, Hart refused to apologize, stating that he had grown since making those tweets. Eventually, Hart stepped down as host and apologized to the LGBTQ community. Later in 2019, Hart ended up in hot water again after comments he made on HBO’s The Shop: Uninterrupted to rapper Lil Nas X about coming out.
11. Chris Brown

Singer Chris Brown made headlines in 2009 with a domestic abuse incident with Rihanna. Brown was physically violent toward Rihanna the night before the Grammys. It’s not surprising that the topic is still a sensitive subject for Brown.
For instance, rapper Raz brought up the domestic violence incident to anger Brown during their Twitter feud. Brown responded with homophobic slurs. He denied being homophobic and blamed Raz for being disrespectful.

Media personality and socialite Kim Kardashian makes news every day. In 2018, she made headlines again after a Twitter spat with model Tyson Beckford. It began when Beckford body-shamed Kardashian on social media, noting he “doesn’t care for it personally.” Kardashian responded, “Sis, we all know why you don’t care about it.”
Many people viewed Kardashian’s response as having a homophobic tone. Kardashian denied being homophobic. Most social media users agreed there was no need for body shaming or homophobic remarks.
13. Manny Pacquiao

Boxing journalists and fans consider Manny Pacquiao one of the greatest boxers of all time. After a career in the ring, he entered politics. In 2016, Pacquiao was asked about his feelings on same-sex marriage, with his comments not going down well.
He stirred up controversy when he compared people in a same-sex marriage to animals. He even claimed animals were better. Many celebrities spoke out against Pacquiao, with former WWE superstar turned actor Dave Bautista even covering up a tattoo of Pacquiao. The boxer later apologized for his comments but the damage was done.
14. Elon Musk

The founder of Tesla and Twitter CEO, Elon Musk, is one of the wealthiest people on the planet. Musk often finds himself at the center of controversy. Musk has openly mocked pronouns on several occasions. He claims he doesn’t hate trans people but continues to mock pronouns.
GLAAD and the LGBTQ community have criticized Musk’s comments. Additionally, one of Musk’s children is trans and changed their name recently to reflect their gender identity better. Despite all this Musk seems relatively untouched, proving those with money don’t really get canceled.
