Multicam Mystery Ranch Urban Assault Backpack Review – 21L Every Day Carry Pack
From the workplace to the mountains, the Mystery Ranch Urban Assault Backpack is your greatest everyday carry ally.
With the Mystery Ranch Urban Assault Backpack, you get the benefits of a bag that’s both compact and yet, still spacious enough to hold tons of cargo.
Best of all, accessing all that cargo is made incredibly easy thanks to Mystery Ranch’s 3-in-1 zip closure system. Seriously, opening and closing this backpack truly couldn’t be easier. Two zippers open the top compartment, while 1 vertical zipper will spread open the entire pack.
Personally, I find this setup to be far better than the backpacks where you have to really dig down deep to find your gear. The 3-in-1 system gives you options over the traditional backpacks.
Speaking of accessing cargo, this backpack holds a respectable 21L (1282 cu-in) volume. Plus there’s a dedicated laptop and tablet sleeve. For my 15” MacBook Pro (latest generation), it slid in and out of the deep sleeve pocket with absolute ease.

Multicam Mystery Ranch Urban Assault Backpack Review
To stay organized you’ll find a zippered lid with a mesh-lined pocket and key clip. There are also 2 internal zippered accessory pockets in the main backpack compartment.
For fast access, it really gets better than just the 3-in-1 zip system. In reality, the over-sized, heavy duty YKK zippers are seriously beefy and grabbing them for a solid tug is super easy. There’s even pull handles next to every zipper, which offers much needed opposing force to just rip this backpack open fast. I’ve yet to see this done on competitor packs, but I absolutely love this feature. Now add in the Uretek 10 coated zippers and you’ve got a winning combination in my book!
In terms of support, this backpack remains comfort regardless of the gear weight. On the main compartment interior, you’ll find a zippered panel with a removable hard, bendable plastic board. The shoulder pads are made from densified urethane and there’s an aerospace mesh on the body panel. Clip together the sternum strap and the Mystery Ranch Urban Assault Backpack is a treat to carry around.
While this backpack may look small and have a super compact profile, it’s anything but short on space. For the office or school, you can fit the laptop, thick textbooks, along with all the pens, pencils, calculators, etc. you can dream of. It’s roomy without overdoing it. For outdoor adventures, I love this pack while hiking. I can literally fit a great majority of my backcountry camping gear inside. Use it as a gym bag, a bug out bag for the car, or however you want. It just works great for so many different every day carry scenarios.
Perhaps that’s why the Mystery Ranch Urban Assault Backpack is one of Mystery Ranch’s most popular and bestselling backpacks.
Lastly, when it comes to durability, well, let’s face it, it’s built by Mystery Ranch. After owning several of their packs, I’ve come to expect a high level of craftsmanship every time. A 500D Cordura fabric construction, YKK zippers, Uretek 10 coated zippers, etc. all make this backpack as rugged as it gets.
