‘Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist’ Coming to Netflix
After leaving such a positive legacy, Netflix has recently announced its plans to honor famed “artist” Chadwick Boseman in an upcoming documentary entitled Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist. Boseman, known largely for his role as King T’Challa, aka the Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, passed away in August of 2020 after a four-year battle with colon cancer.
“Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV,” the Boseman family stated. “A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more – all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther.” The trailer for the upcoming documentary can be seen below:
The documentary will feature those who worked closely with Boseman, such as Spike Lee (Do The Right Thing), Viola Davis (Fences), and Denzel Washington (The Book of Eli), who “sponsored the late artist’s year abroad at the Oxford Mid-Summer Program of the British American Drama Academy in England.”
Boseman’s career was a true achievement and success, starring in iconic roles such as the titular character in the Oscar-nominated superhero film Black Panther, which was the first superhero film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. After his debut in Captain America: Civil War, he reprised the role in both Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, with a final posthumous performance as T’Challa set to be released in the upcoming Disney+ series What If?, which will feature an alternate version of the character.
Boseman was also known for playing real-life heroes such as Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall in Marshall, the “Godfather of Soul” James Brown in Get On Up, and baseball legend Jackie Robinson in 42. He also starred in and produced the action-thriller 21 Bridges in 2019.
Most recently, Boseman starred in the Spike Lee drama Da 5 Bloods, a war drama about five Vietnam War veterans who return to the country in search of lost treasure, and George C. Wolfe’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, opposite Viola Davis, the latter of which has earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
Chadwick Boseman: Portrait of an Artist is set to be released on Netflix on April 17th.
