What Do Number 13 Tattoos Mean? [2022 Information Guide]

What Do Number 13 Tattoos Mean? [2022 Information Guide]

While the number 13 is associated with bad luck in Sailor Jerry’s world of “squares,” it is the opposite for tattoo lovers.

The unlucky number is treated as an antidote to conventional bad luck and identifier to other ink enthusiasts. The number 13 is associated with superstitious sailors, prison gangs and outlaws, and old school concepts of alienation and being an outsider.

The following article delves further into the mystery, history and continuing popularity of number 13 tattoos.

What does the number 13 tattoo mean?

There are a couple of motivations for the number 13 being considered lucky for a tattoo artist and their clientele. According to Trent Aitken-Smith’s Tattoo Dictionary, “if bad luck came your way and saw the number 13 tattooed on you, it would assume you already had enough misfortune and pass you by.”

Another school of thought tied to superstition believes that a traditional bad luck symbol tattoo cancels out the negatives and reverses the meaning, while many prison inmates and gang members from Southern California, and outlaw bikers wear the 13 as a badge of alienation from traditional society.

Flash tattoos sheets featuring the number 13, or even the lucky 13, are some of the oldest types of traditional tattoo art you’ll find. Number 13 tattoos hearken back to the old school era of Western tattooing, when most individuals getting inked were sailors or navy men getting a daredevil tattoo.

Just as it is claimed above by Aitken Smith, if you had a 13 tattoo you were a person looking to turn the tide against conventional luck that says 13, and the date Friday the 13th are unlucky.

Judas Iscariot was the 13th disciple of Jesus. The Knights Templar were disbanded on Friday, May 13, 1307, and the Mayans thought the 13th month on their lunar calendar led to apocalypse.

The number 13 plays a massive part in the contemporary notion of luck. Most passenger aircraft don’t have a row 13, and tall buildings with lifts don’t have a 13th floor.

Gangs, Prisons, Bikers and the Number 13 Tattoos

MS 13 Gang Member

1. Sureño vs. Norteños

The number 13 is politically relevant in graffiti, street gangs, the US Prison system, and even for gangs internationally. According to author Karen Kinnear, in 1968 California prison inmates were separated into two rival groups, Norteno (northerner) and Sureno gang  (southerner). This separation was based on the locations of the prisoners hometowns.

The Sureno gang uses the number 13, representing the thirteenth letter of the alphabet, the letter M, in order to mark their allegiance to the Mexican Mafia prison gang. They’re strongest in the Southern part of California, Arizona and New Mexico.

There are many variations in the markings for Sureno gang members tattoos and graffiti, and in each expression there’s a variation of the number 13 – whether it’s a simple number, roman numeral, or script interpretation.

The Norteno gang– linked to the Nuestra Familia mafia prison outfit – are strongest to the north of Los Angeles in the Bay Area and California’s prison and gang system. Nortenos use the number 14 in their gang tattoos.

The California dividing line between north and south is around Salinas and Fresno.

2. MS-13

Mara Salvatrucha, commonly known as MS-13, is an international gang that originated in Los Angeles. The gang was initially set up to protect Salvadoran immigrants from other gangs in the Los Angeles area, but has since grown into one of the most fearsome gang outfits in the world.

Their ties to the number 13 mean that MS-13 is often affiliated with the aims of the Sureno gang, although their vicious methods and often scorched earth policy mean they’re feared by rivals more than admired. Many of their members have matching tattoos in highly visible areas, such as the face, neck, or head.

3. Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs

The 13 patch is often worn on an outlaw member’s colors, symbolizing that the biker either smokes marijuana, deals in it, or has contact for methamphetamine. It can also have links to the Mother chapter for a motorcycle club.

“Numbers can play a lot of politics in tattoos,” tattoo artist Iron Monk told VICE. “If you don’t think about it, you could be walking in the wrong place or the wrong hood or the wrong city and… they might check you with those numbers on you.”

Number 13 Tattoos and the Friday the 13th Special

Some tattooists offer tattoo enthusiasts a ‘Friday the 13th’ special where they small tattoo flash sheet ink for Friday the 13th or do number 13 tattoos for walk up customers.

A tattoo parlor  promoting these tattoo deals will even offer to do the work for $13 as part of the promotion. My advice would be to pay a bit extra for a more impressive piece of Friday the 13th body art.

And remember, with the cheap season rates often touted widely on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, there’s inevitably going to be long lines of people looking to get into the game for their first tattoo, or even their 50th.

It’s also worth noting that if you’re going to take advantage of the Friday the 13th $13 number 13 cheap tattoo, you better have a twenty on hand when it comes time to pay. Tipping is part of the deal when getting inked, so a lucky $7 is expected to be part of the final price.

Given the fact you’re saving around $50 off the regular pricing for the cheap tattoo, an extra $7 is not too much to ask!

Former Ink Master judge Oliver Peck kick started the new tradition for number 13 tattoos.

“I definitely wasn’t the first person to do it, the number 13 tattoo on the Friday the 13th,” Peck told VICE. “But, I definitely made it an event.”

In 1995 Peck threw a Friday the 13th party at his parlor in Dallas that lasted 24 hours, inking any and everyone with special Friday the 13th flash tattoos, and a new ink tradition was born.

Peck also once held a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for tattooing the 13. In 2008 at his Elm Street Tattoo Shop in Texas, Peck completed 415 flash sheet tattoos of the number 13 in a consecutive 24-hour period.

Peck’s record was quickly broken by a tattoo artist named Hollis Cantrell, who tattooed the letters AZ 808 times in 24 hours at his tattoo shop.
